APPLICATION TO REZONE LANDS ON NORTH STREET WAS OVERTURNED BY COUNCIL
To all members of the GGRA. Cottagers Take Note.
To all members of the GGRA
I'd like to thank all those GGRA
members who wrote to the Mayor and Council, or came in person to the June
22nd Council meeting, regarding the North Street application for a zoning
amendment which would have allowed extensive development in a residential
area.
There must have been almost 60 people there, some from the Muskoka Bay
Property Owners Assoc., some from the GGRA, and some from North Street.
All were opposed, and many spoke! Council admitted they had received
countless letters on the subject application, objecting. I must commend
Council for patiently listening to all who wanted to speak, and in the
end, the application was NOT JUST DEFERRED, as Nick Popovich from the
planning dept. had recommended, BUT OVERTURNED AND THROWN OUT!! Wow!!
We must have made an impression!! Bob Colhoun at first was going to vote
to defer, but in the end, it was unanimous, that the applicatin be
defeated. In my opinion, the owners have a developer interested in
purchasing the property, so there will most likely be another concept of
development for that property, which we'll have to watch carefully. I
believe the only way to build ANYTHING on that piece of waterfront, would
be to blast the beautiful granite ridge to make the property level enough
for a building site. That would be criminal, in my opinion. We WILL
watch!!!
But I DID want to let everyone know that the show of individuals at the
council meeting was very impressive, and I'm sure made the councillors
sit up and take notice. It shows what we can do when we join together
for a common cause. Without all those people objecting, the amendment
may have been approved. THERE IS STRENGTH IN NUMBERS!! So thank you
again. The GGRA is growning stronger, and we CAN help others and we CAN
make a difference. Good job, everyone. Evelyn Matson
